Caden McDonald helps power Wings to 6-3 win

A pair of power-play goals provided just enough advantage for the Wings, recording a 6-3 win over the Rock in Greater Sudbury Lacrosse Association tyke action earlier this week.

The winners received a three-goal effort from Caden McDonald, two more from Caden Dubreuil, and one final tally from Owen Peck in their victory. Tyler Thompson answered with a pair of goals in a losing cause, with Ethan Lamothe rounding out the scoring.

After a couple of summers of soccer, McDonald, a Grade 2 student at Félix-Ricard, opted to try something different last year, joining lacrosse with a friend.
"I didn't know what it was going to be like," he explained.

It didn't take long for McDonald to get his bearings.

"It's the opposite of hockey," he noted. "In hockey, you have to keep your stick down, and in lacrosse, you have to have your stick up."

Grasping the basics, McDonald moved quickly to incorporating keys elements of the game that would help him find his way on to the scoresheet.

"Well, if you're a lefty, you have to shoot from the right side, because it's easier," he stated.

"If you're a righty, you have to shoot from the left side, because it's easier."

Getting exposure to both houseleague and rep lacrosse in year one, McDonald has developed a productive scoring touch, though he admits to having a favourite from his hat-trick performance against the Rock.

"My favourite was the last one, because they checked me hard, and then I wanted to get some revenge," he smiled.

Taking time for a quick interview after the game, McDonald postponed a post-game shower, not the best idea given that he admits that his lacrosse equipment smells far worse than his hockey stuff.

"I work harder in lacrosse," pointed out the talkative eight year old. "You run, you don't skate. In hockey, I'm not this tired."

The game was the second tyke encounter of the evening at Carmichael, with the Roughnecks posting a 5-3 win over the Rush in the opener.

Ethan Morris scored twice for the Roughnecks, with singles coming from Ben Allen, Jacob Dillabough and Mathias Saari, while Samuel Dumais countered with all three goals for the Rush.
