After winning only two games this past season and failing to find a qualified coach to take on the team, Cambrian College's women's varsity basketball team has been suspended by the college.

“Each year, the College evaluates the merits and viability of each varsity program, and after much deliberation, a difficult decision was made to suspend the women’s Golden Shield varsity basketball program,” said a press release.

“The team struggled for the past two seasons, winning only two games in 2016-17. Looking ahead to 2017-18, Cambrian actively sought a new coach with appropriate credentials who would be a good fit for the College and the program, but that search was not successful.”

The college has advised varsity staff and players as well as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) of the decision.

Under OCAA regulations, the college will not be able to field a team for two seasons (until the 2019-20 season).

The college and the Cambrian Athletic Association, which is a student government organization, will continue to offer intramural basketball and a range of competitive sports in 2017-18.

The varsity program as a whole has shown tremendous momentum and strength in the past season, with teams and individual athletes breaking records and earning provincial and national recognition and medals, the press release said.

Cross-country runner Mary Strain earned a provincial gold and national silver medal. In addition, soccer striker Tiffany Johnson broke a provincial record in 2016, becoming the OCAA’s All-Time Leading goal scorer with 62 career goals, and 28 in a single season.

Cambrian’s women’s soccer team earned OCAA bronze and will compete at the Provincial Women’s Soccer Championships (October 26-28) which will be held at the James Jerome Sports Complex in Sudbury.
