Gord Apolloni, owner of Top Glove Boxing Academy and head organizer for the event is preparing to host another boxing match this summer on July 7.

Head to Top Glove Boxing Academy on July 7 to see some of Sudbury's best young fighters square off against fighters who have travelled all the way from Italy to see who will come out on top.

“We have a select team from Italy coming here and they're going to be boxing against the select team from Canada,” Gord Apolloni, owner of Top Glove Boxing Academy and head organizer for the event, told Sudbury.com in an interview.

There are a total of five boxers who are provincially ranked in Ontario that will represent Canada for the occasion – including two national champions Hunter Lee from Windsor and Top Glove’s very own Owen Paquette.

They’ll be pitted against five select boxers from Riccione, Italy. Apolloni is expecting the fights to be challenging for both sides, but this isn’t the first challenging international fight.

“This is not the first event that we've had,” Apolloni said. “They (Italian boxing athletes) were here in 2018 and they were very challenging.”

Sudbury.com went live at Top Glove for the fight in 2018 where the crowd of 240 people witnessed an evening of skill and talent. This year, Apolloni hopes to bring the international fighting experience back for Canadian boxers.

“It's (the fight) experience that our locals need to compete at the international level. Boxing all over the world is different, and it’s better in Italy. They've had greater successes in the Olympic Games and World Championships than Canada has. So they're doing something right. So the more that we're exposed to the international scene, the more they will be prepared to box them at the international scene,” Apolloni said.

The international fight card is as follows (local fighters' names first):

  • Jason Marquez VS Matte Omiccioli (64kg)
  • Emilia Zang VS Fabiana Merli (57kg)
  • Sammi Umarzor VS Michela Svarca (63kg)
  • Joseph Amaral VS Massimo Palmieri (71kg)
  • Owen Paquette VS Lorenzo Tulli (64kg)

The night will also include a draw for prizes such as a flat screen TV and a firepit as well. The event will be held at Elm Place (formerly known as the Rainbow Mall), 40 Elm St. and tickets are available here. While the event starts at 6 p.m., the boxing matches will start at 8 p.m.
