The 2017 Canada Russia series will make a stop in Sudbury this November, as part of the six-game series between the best players in the Canadian Hockey League and the best young Russian players.
The series features regional games across the country with two games hosted by the WHL, two by the OHL, and two by the QMJHL. Sudbury will be stop number four along the way, when a team of top OHL prospects will take on the Russians on Nov. 13.
“For the 15th straight season CHL communities across our country will have the opportunity to experience the passion that only a Canada and Russia rivalry can produce,” said CHL President David Branch.
“Our appreciation is extended to title partner CIBC for supporting this event that will showcase many of our league’s best players and future Canadian National Junior Team stars.”
A total of 29 players from last season’s event competed in the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Toronto and Montreal, including 15 CHL players on Team Canada who earned silver, led by tournament MVP Thomas Chabot of the Saint John Sea Dogs, and 14 Russian players who captured bronze.
Sudbury joins Owen Sound as the OHL hosts for the series. Out west, the province of Saskatchewan will host both games, as Moose Jaw will be the location for game one on Nov. 6, and Swift Current will host game number two.
For the first time in the series' 15 year history, a game will be played in Prince Edward Island, as game five will be played Nov. 14 in Charlottetown, PEI, home of the QMJHL's Charlottetown Islanders.
The series wraps up on Nov. 16 in Moncton, NB.
