Cheers of a hometown crowd lead Wolves to victory

North Bay Battalion defeated 11-3 at the Sudbury Community Arena

A crowd of 3,865 fans dressed in blue and white gathered at the Sudbury Community Arena Friday night, to watch the Sudbury Wolves face off against the North Bay Battalion in their 2019-20 home opener.

Landing seven goals in one period, the Wolves secured an 11-3 victory against their Hwy 17 rivals, building on the momentum of Sunday's win against Mississauga. Wolves' Christian Purboo managed to stop 27 of 30 shots on net, while Battalions' Christian Cicigoi surrendered 7 of 27 shots, and Joe Vrbetic allowed 5 of 14.

Battalions' Brandon Coe opened up the scoreboard with a goal 5:29 minutes into play, giving North Bay their first and only lead of the home opener. It wouldn't take long for Sudbury to stake their claim on the scoreboard.

Wolves' Nolan Hutchenson got his first goal of the season off an assist by Quinton Byfield at 11:07. Shortly thereafter, an assist by Macauley Carson helped David Levin claim his first goal of 2019 with under five seconds left in play.

The Wolves burst onto the ice in the second period, scoring seven consecutive goals to secure their game-winning lead. Owen Gilhula got the ball rolling less than one minute into the period, off an assist by Levin and Carson. Blake Murray was the next to the net, scoring his second goal of the season off an assist by Byfield and Shane Bulitka at 1:04.

The following goals were delivered by Wolves' Ethan Larmand, Gilhula, and Isaak Phillips. Sudbury's Chase Stillman and Giordano Biondi scored the last two goals of the period, with assistance from Owen Robinson and Hutchenson, followed by McCallum.

North Bay put up a fight in the third period, earning two points off goals by Battalions' Matthew Struthers and Paul Christopoulos, but it wasn't enough to claim victory. The Sudbury Wolves scored two goals of their own in the final, one by Carson at 14:11 and another by OHL newcomer, Jack Thompson at 18:03.

In the end, the Sudbury Wolves claimed an 11-3 final against the North Bay Battalion, balancing their record 2-2 for the regular season.
