The City of Greater Sudbury will see improvements to 16 of its community arenas through a $1.2-million investment by the city in conjunction with the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure program.
Improvements to the facilities will include the installation of emergency lighting, ammonia monitoring equipment and barrier-free access for people with disabilities.
Upgrades will also be made to existing fire alarm equipment, player benches and penalty boxes.
The upgrades will be made in order to meet the standards of both the Ontario Hockey Federation and the Canadian Standards Association.
Industry Canada and the SuperBuild initiative will each contribute approximately $337,415 to the project, with the city investing the balance.
Construction is expected to be complete by October 2002.
