The Greater Sudbury Cubs are celebrating the return of Nolan Newton this week.

Calling him “one of the most skilled forwards to wear a Cubs jersey”, Newton returns to the Nickel City after a stint with the Barrie Colts.

“Newton, 18, began the season with the OHL Barrie Colts and due to nagging injuries, the local star forward only managed to play in four games,” the team said in a news release. “With the Colts loading-up for a run at the OHL championship this season, Nolan and the Colts mutually agreed it would be best for Nolan’s development to return to the Cubs and help lead the team to another league championship.”

Helping lead the team to a championship is something Newton is familiar with. Last season, he led the Cubs in play-off scoring with 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points in 15 games. During the regular season, Newton led the Cubs in points per game by averaging 1.94 points per game including 28 goals, 34 assists for 62 points in just 32 regular season games.

“It is very exciting to welcome Nolan back to the Cubs family” said Head Coach Darryl Moxam. “Adding someone with Nolan’s skills, work ethic and character will make us a better team. Nolan has been instrumental in helping shape the culture of our Cubs program over the past two seasons. Nolan fully understands as well as anyone exactly what it means to be a part of the Cubs family and we welcome  him back with open arms.”

Newton joins an offensively talented Cubs line-up with veteran forwards Lucas Signoretti and Sam Assinewai, and rookie Mason Walker all among the top 20 in league scoring. Newton’s arrival will add even more offensive skill to the Cubs line-up.

The Cubs are on the road this week, playing three games in three nights starting on Thursday with a road trip to Hearst, Timmins and Iroquois Falls. The Cubs are back in action at home next Thursday,  Nov. 14 when they host former Cubs’ goaltender Noah Metivier and the Soo Thunderbirds at 7:05 p.m. at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
