The Greater Sudbury Cubs are still ahead in their best-of-seven, first-round playoff series against the Espanola Paper Kings despite falling 3-1 to their rivals on Sunday.

In the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey Association semi-final, the Cubs lead 2-1. Game 4 is scheduled for tonight in Espanola.** Puck drops at a 7:30 p.m.

The Kings drew first blood in ths one, with Jonathan Lush sent in all alone on a breakaway, beating Cubs goalkeeper Noah Metivier over the blocker at 2:27 to make it 1-0 Espanola.

Back and forth action for the remainder of the opening frame saw neither team score again

“Action in the second stanza saw the home side connect while down a skater once more as they pushed a play ahead off a draw in their own zone and saw Lucas Signoretti jam in the rebound off his own chance, prior to the midway point of the proceedings,” a game report on the match states.

With the score at 2-0, Signoretti would add another goal to his credit in the third, chipping one off the boards passed a Greater Sudbury defender and darting down the left wing before driving hard to the net and notching his second of the evening to make it 3-0.

Paper Kings goalie Jake Marois stopped all shots save one fired his way on Sunday evening.

With less than five minutes remaining, Cubs defender Kyloe Ellis drove to the net and notched Sudbury’s only goal of the game.

The Cubs would pull their goalie for a late-game man advantage but it wwoldn’t be enough.
