A goal by Greater Sudbury Cub Mason Walker helped his Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League team notch a narrow 2-1 victory over the Soo Eagles on Friday night.

Held at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex, it was a home-ice victory.

Although fast-paced with plenty of energy from both sides, according to an NOJHL media release, there were no goals scored, with the teams hitting intermission with no tallies.

In the second period, the Cubs broke the deadlock after coming out of their own end and saw Eidan Macartney whip in his third goal of the season off a nice back pass from Walker, on an in-close two-on-one.

Walker secured a second goal, bringing the score to 2-0 when he snagged a plan at the Eagles’ blue line, darted down the right wing and lifted a backhand past Sault Ste. Marie netminder Mason Burkes.

The visitors came back to get on the board with eight and a half minutes remaining in regulation, when Cooper Fredericks made a spin move just inside the Cubs’ zone that found Alex Povorozniouk, who snuck one past the blocker of goaltender Noah Beaulne.

Getting Burkes out late for an additional skater, the Eagles looked to tie the game and force overtime, but the hosts held firm defensively to collect their win.

The Greater Sudbury Cubs’ record is now 4-1-1-1, while the Soo slipped to 1-2-0-0.

The Cubs’ next game will be held Sept. 29 against the French River Rapids, at the Noelville Arena.
