Greater Sudbury Cubs’ captain Oliver Smith is one of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s (NOJHL) Eastlink Three Stars of the Week.
Announced Monday, Smith was named alongside Espanola Paper Kings defencemen Spencer Horgan and Powassan Voodoos defender Alex Little.

The Cubs earned a pair of wins to start the season, with Smith supplying six points for the Cubs all on his own.

In the Cubs’ 7-4 season-opening win over the Hearst Lumberjacks on Sept. 7, 20-year-old Smith earned an assist on the game-winning goal. Then on Sept. 8, the Lively native picked up five points (one goal, four assists) to lead the squad to victory over defending NOJHL champs the Timmins Rock.

A star also went to Paper Kings defender Spencer Horgan. The 18-year-old from Bownmanville, Ont., scored twice and and earned two assists in Espanola’s win over Hearst on Sept. 8. Leading NOJHL defenders in points, he followed that with two assists in a win against the Soo Thunderbirds the next day.

Voodoos’ defender Alex Little closes out the first Three Stars of the season, as he closes in on the Powassan franchise record for career points by a defenceman.

On Sept. 8, he assisted on the eventual game-winner, added two more helpers, then notched a power play goal, while playing solid defensively in a shutout over visiting French River.

The 20-year-old from Minden, Ont., already has 23 multi-point performances in his time with Powassan that also seen him provide 90 points in his first 105 NOJHL outings.
