Game ends 7-1 after a huge first period for Greater Sudbury
The Greater Sudbury Cubs scored six goals in the first period on their way to a 7-1 win over the French River Rapids on Feb. 15.

The Greater Sudbury Cubs delivered a 7-1 trouncing of the French River Rapids in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action on Feb. 15, scoring six goals in the first period alone.

The Rapids were paying a visit to Sudbury for this one, so fans at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex were treated to a wild first period.

“Marshall McCharles led the Cubs attack with a pair of first period tallies. Oliver Smith supplied three assists and Cameron Shanks added one goal and two assists in the Cubs win,” the league said in a news release.

McCharles netted his 11th of the season at 1:25 of the first as he raced down the left wing and fired a shot by Rapids goalie Elijah Grant.

Cameron Shanks added to the lead at 5:01 to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Then, Hudson Chitaroni scored just over three minutes later for his 26th of the campaign to make it 3-0 Cubs.

“Just over a minute later the offence continued to roll as Brock Houser got into the offensive outburst with his eighth (of the season), which made it 4-0,” the release states.

After he allowed four goals on 15 shots, Rapids starter Grant got the hook, and was replaced by Brady Dyer.

McCharles increased the Cubs lead with his 12th at 15:08 of the opening frame.

Cubs defenceman Mason Chitaroni got into the scoring parade just over 30 seconds later.

The Rapids finally beat Noah Metivier at 6:47 of the second thanks to Dominic Bzdyl to make it 6-1, but it was too little, too late.

Ethan Larmand rounded out the scoring at 2:56 of the third for a final score of 7-1.

On Feb. 17, the Cubs travel to Blind River to take on the Beavers.

The Cubs continue to sit in first place in the NOJHL with 78 points, two points ahead of the Beavers.
