It was a dramatic finish to last night’s game between the Greater Sudbury Cubs and the Espanola Paper Kings.
Knotted at one goal apiece, Cubs forward Cameron Walker’s exciting end-to-end dash with just 66 seconds on the clock culminated in a game-winning goal to give Greater Sudbury the 2-1 win.
The win in Espanola gives Greater Sudbury a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven playoff series.
Espanola defenceman Justin Seguin scored the first of the game about halfway through the opening stanza. He blasted a shot through a screen from the left side that sailed over the blocker of Greater Sudbury goalkeeper Noah Metivier.
The Cubs finally tied it up at 11:52 of the second period when Walker took a crisp cross-crease feed from Samuel Assinewai and jammed it past Paper Kings’ netminder Jake Marois.
“Espanola had a great chance to retake the lead with just over two minutes left in the third as Devin Mauro knocked a puck free and went in alone on Metivier, only to be stymied by the Greater Sudbury stopper,” the team said in a news release.
The teams would stay tied up at 1-1 for the rest of the second and most of the third. That is until Walker scored his second of the game with 66 seconds to go to give the Cubs the lead and, ultimately, the win.
The Cubs look to finish off the series on Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. start at T.M. Davies Community Centre and Arena.
