A tournament performance that was about as close to defensive perfection as head coach Ian Reinhardt and his staff could ask for propelled the Sudbury Midget "BB" Lady Wolves to a championship banner at the Cambridge Roadrunners 24th Annual New Year's Challenge earlier this month.
The local crew reeled off five straight shutouts en route to gold, all while winning four of their five outings by three goals or less. The pattern was established in game one as goals from Isabella Becker, McKenna Cresswell and Lexie McNamara lifted the Lady Wolves past the Toronto Leaside Wildcats - Scanlan 3-0.
Game two against the remaining Leaside team produced the one truly lopsided encounter, as the Lady Wolves thumped the Wildcats 6-0, with Aaliyah Canard and Emma Chamberland scoring twice each of the winners.
Bradie Roy and Isabella Becker rounded out the scoring. The northern crew capped off their round robin schedule with a 3-0 win over the Belleville Bearcats, netting a goal in each of the first (Lilia Mae Samuels), second (Taylor Buchkowski) and third periods (Cresswell).
Yet another 3-0 win, this one over Toronto Leaside in the semis, paved the way to a rematch with Belleville come Sunday afternoon, as a hat trick from Emma Chamberland accounted for the entire Sudbury offensive output.
Goals from Bradie Roy and Isabella Becker tied the weekend off with a perfect bow, the Lady Wolves registering a 2-0 gold medal win over the Bearcats.
Rounding out the roster for the Midget "BB" Lady Wolves are goaltenders Dylann Aikia and Dana Lewis, as well as skaters Katie Pichette, Mackenzie Tardif, Kasey Faught, Kayden Charbonneau, Cassy Waters, Janelle Brunette and Faith Taylor.
With the Sudbury Midget "BB" girls earning a direct berth in provincials in April, the team will now turn their attention to the Northern Competitive Girls Hockey League playoff weekend set for mid-March.
