Esso Cup 2019: Lady Wolves have the hot hands in 5-2 win over Les As

Sudbury closes out the prelim rounds in second place behind Saskatoon

With the preliminary rounds of the 2019 Esso Cup at an end, all that remains are Canada's four best female midget teams, one of which is, as many suspected it would be, the Sudbury Lady Wolves.

With a 5-2 over Les As de Québec ('Les As' translating to 'aces' English) on Thursday night, the Lady Wolves (3-1-1) finish the prelim in second place, one point back of the Saskatoon Stars (4-0-1), who took their only loss of the tournament on Monday against Les As.

In third going into the championship rounds is the Stony Creek Sabres, while the two-time defending champion St. Albert Slash from Alberta sit in fourth place.

Last night, Lady Wolves' Madison Laberge (in fifth place in points) was the hero of the night, scoring twice and added two assists. Sudbury's Alexe Clavelle (fourth in points) added a two goals and an assist to the tally, giving the Sudbury Lady Wolves a 5-2 win over the As de Québec.

Clavelle drew first blood for Sudbury about 10 minutes into the period, to give Sudbury the lead in what would be an otherwise scoreless period.

A high-scoring and exciting second period followed. After Sudbury's Lauren Hancock took a hooking penalty early on, Alexandra Giguère scored on the power play to tie the game.

Katie Chomiak scored for the Lady Wolves four minutes later to give the lead back to Sudbury, with Clavelle adding an insurance goal for Nickel City seven minutes later, to bring the score to 3-1.

Québec answered back as the period ended to draw within a goal of Sudbury.

The third looked like it might not go Sudbury's way as the team took three penalties in a row to start the period. However, the Lady Wolves managed to kill all those penalties without incident.

In the final five minutes of the game, Laberge scored twice to seal the deal giving Sudbury the 5-2 win.

Cailen Hanzlik was strong between the pipes for Sudbury, stopping 27 of the 29 shots she faced. Justine Sylvain of Les As stopped 26 of 31 shots.

The Lady Wolves face the Stoney Creek Sabres in the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m. If you can't make the game, you can watch it on the Hockey Canada website, where the games are being livestreamed. Here's a link.
