Top Glove Boxing Academy fighters shone when the club welcomed boxers from Ontario and Quebec for an evening at the fights on June 1.
The event featured 11 bouts and one exhibition fight. Fighters from Top Glove, now in its 35th year, came out on top in four of their seven bouts.
“Top Glove boxer Michael Khazanski proved too much for his opponent and the fight was stopped in the second round while Shon Vivier fought hard but lost a close split decision,” the club, which is operated by Olympic boxing coach Gord Apolloni, said in a news release.
Owen Gliese-Thomas and Magnus Kain of Top Glove stood tall, but suffered early stoppages in both fights. The losses “will do little to discourage Owen and Magnus but will propel them to train harder and dig deeper as both possess the will to win,” the club said.
Jadyn Lewis of Top Glove and Ley Villacourta of Beaver Boxing in Ottawa offered fans a high intensity, action packed bout. After the fists had finished flying, local fighter Lewis would have his arm raised as winner by split decision.
Next Top Glove’s Gavin MacIsaac took on Mathieu Kistabish of Amos, Que., a fighter who had beaten the local pugilist the week before in Val d’Or. Not this time though. MacIsaac would go on to earn Fight of the Night honours by punching his way to a split decision victory.
“The night would end with the thunderous booms of straight lefts thrown by Top Glove’s Matthias Willems,” Top Glove said. “At 200 pounds, Matthias is a sculpted brute with an intense purpose and it was bold for Bardi Neshatiasl of Saliwan Boxing in Toronto to step into the ring. Matthias proved too much for Bardi and the fight was ended in the first round.”
Top Glove thanked all the fight fans who supported the evening, as well as the sponsors and volunteers who made it happen, and the fighters who took part.
