Five sweep weekend series against TBL’s L’Academie D’Alma

Sudbury comes away with 114-85 victory on home court.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon April 16 in the Nickel City and 2,146 boisterous fans were in the Old Barn to take in a Sudbury Five matinee and cheer their team on to a 114-85 victory over the L’Academie D’Alma of The Basketball League.

Right out of the gate, the Five continued where they left off the night before, with Montell McRae  dished out a bounce pass which AJ Mosby converted into a slam dunk. Later in the quarter, Braylon Rayson split the D’Alma defense for the jump shot to widen Sudbury’s lead. To end the quarter, Duane Notice stripped D’Alma of the ball and converted the easy layup. The Sudbury Five held a 32-29 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

With 10:22 remaining in the second quarter Notice found a hole in the defence and converted a tough layup to tie the game up at 34 apiece. With 3:48 remaining in the second quarter Mosby made another layup attempt, then converted on the ensuing foul to give Sudbury a 44-41 lead. With exactly three minutes remaining in the third quarter, JD Miller found Jeremy Harris wide open for a pass, who converted a dunk to give the Five a 46-41 lead. With seconds left in the second quarter Montell McRae shot a 3 pointer from downtown to give Sudbury a 52-47 lead heading into the halftime break. 

With 4:55 remaining in the third quarter Braylon Rayson dished the ball to Jeremy Harris who converted on a layup and the ensuing free throw attempt to complete a three point play and give Sudbury a 69-51 lead. With 2:20 remaining in the third quarter Montell McRae dunked the ball through the basket to give Sudbury a 78-53 lead. With one second left in the third quarter, Braylon Rayson served up a three point shot to give Sudbury an 85-60 lead with one quarter left to play. 

Ten seconds into the third quarter Duane Notice converted on an alley oop pass from JD Miller to give Sudbury an 87-60 lead. With under ten minutes to go, JD Miller split the defense for a layup and also converted on the free throw to give Sudbury a 90-64 lead. With 3:24 remaining Dexter Williams Jr. served up an alley oop pass which Montell McRae converted to give Sudbury a 108-80 lead. The Sudbury came away with a win by a score of 114-85. 

When asked if the preparation for the D’Alma was different after seeing how they play the previous night, he said “A little bit. We just changed some things up and focused on our strengths,” and said the focus is on an “end goal to win the NBLC Championship.”

With the win, the Sudbury Five now have a record of 21 wins and 5 losses on the season and remain on top of the National Basketball League of Canada standings. 

Sudbury has a few days off before back to back games at the Sudbury Arena against the Jamestown Jackals of The Basketball League. Those gamesd goes on April 22 at 7 p.m. and April 23 at 2 p.m..
