Sudbury Five power forward JD Miller led the team in scoring with 35 in a game that saw the hometowners fall to the KW Titans.

The 17-7 Sudbury Five and the 16-7 Kitchener-Waterloo Titans showed why they’re the top two teams in the Basketball Super League last night. Battling it out in a tight game that went down to the wire, the Titans managed to squeak by with a 104-103 victory over the now second-place Five.

Sudbury came out for the first quarter flying, scoring 34 points, with Duane Notice leading the way with nine points. After the first quarter, the Sudbury Five held a 34-28 lead over the Titans.

Kitchener tightened the game in the second quarter, scoring 27 points to Sudbury’s 23, and after the first half the Sudbury Five held a slim 57-55 lead heading into the break.

The teams came out of the dressing room hoping to gain an edge over their opponent in the third quarter, but it was the Titans who came out firing, outscoring the Five 31-23 with Demetrius Barnes scoring seven points to lead the Titans in the quarter.

Kitchener-Waterloo held an 86-80 lead with one quarter remaining in the basketball game.

Sudbury rebounded in the final quarter to win the quarter by a 23-18 margin, but fell short by a score of 104-103.

The Sudbury Five fall to second place in the Basketball Super League with a record of 17 wins and eight losses on the season. The Titans now sit at No. 1.

The team is back home on Saturday for an afternoon against the struggling Newfoundland Rogues with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
