A third and deciding game is going to be needed to crown a champion in the Sudbury high school Division II girls hockey ranks, and the teams will have plenty of time to strategize for the rubber match.
The Bishop Carter Gators blanked the Marymount Regals 3-0 Thursday afternoon in Val Caron, as goaltender Madison Penrose recorded the shutout and received ample offensive support courtesy of Sydney Hall, Jade St. Pierre and Kaitlin Simard.
The victory came after the Gators had suffered a tough 3-2 loss, in overtime, just a day earlier. Emma Chamberland capped off a hat trick for Marymount in style, scoring the game-winning goal with her team short-handed midway through the five minute extra session.
St. Pierre and Hall found the back of the net for Bishop Carter, who peppered Marymount puckstopper Kirstey Johnston with 35 shots, while Penrose finished with 29 saves at the other end of the rink.
In the end, it was the scoring touch of Chamberland that would make the difference. "I knew that we had the icing on our side, so that if I stayed high, I could still get the call if I missed the pass," said the 16 year old grade 11 sniper.
"When I got to the corner, they had the man advantage, so I thought there would be two on me, but there wasn't, so I kind of went for it and hoped for the best."
With March Break beginning on Monday, the trophy presentation will now be delayed until after the return to school on March 20, though a final time and venue for Game 3 has not yet been determined.
