Sudbury Wolves head coach Scott Barney shakes hands with Donovan McCoy, the player the Pack has tapped to serve as the team’s 54th captain.

The Sudbury Wolves have chosen their 54th team captain as the 2024-25 season dawns.

Donovan McCoy wears the “C”, accompanied by a leadership team that includes Kocha Delic, Alex Pharand, Nick DeAngelis and Quentin Musty.

“Being named captain of such a historic team like the wolves is a huge honour,” McCoy said in a news release. “It’s a privilege to be able to lead the team not only on the ice but off the ice and in the  community as well.”

A right-shot defender, McCoy joined the Pack back in January. Since then, he played 30 regular season games and nine post-season games, earning 20 points (3G-17A) in the process. He also recently participated in the Pittsburgh Penguins 2024 training and development camps.

Outside hockey, the team highlighted his volunteer efforts as a Hockey Gives Blood ambassador and the recipient of the 2023-24 Dayna Brons Honorary Award from Canadian Blood Services

For Head Coach Scott Barney, McCoy represents exactly what the Wolves are looking for in a leader.

"Donovan embodies everything we seek in a gentleman of character within the Sudbury Wolves organization,” he said. “His leadership, discipline, and accountability, along with his positive attitude on and off the ice, make him an exceptional team player.

“He has experience as  an assistant captain on an OHL championship-winning team and as a captain the following season. He truly is a players’ player, and we believe his leadership will help guide our team towards the goals we’ve set for this season.”

A Belleville native, McCoy stands 6-1 and weighs 205 pounds. He was drafted 15th overall by the Peterborough Petes in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, and as an assistant captain during the 2022-23 season helped them secure the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions.

Before joining the Wolves, he served as captain for the Petes during the 2023-24 season.
