Cambrian College is rallying around its women’s soccer team as athletes and coaches prepare for to compete for a medal in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association provincial championships in their home town.

The Golden Shield women’s soccer team is ranked third in Ontario and ninth in Canada as they enter the 2017 BelairDirect OCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in Sudbury with a 8-2-0 regular season record. 

The team has podium experience, earning provincial bronze medals in 2016 and 2014. The Golden Shield’s first championship game takes place on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at the James Jerome Sports Complex, on Centennial Drive.

What to watch:

  • There has been a goal explosion in OCAA women's soccer, with the previous single season record of 20 being surpassed by three different players over the span of two seasons. 
  • Cambrian's Tiffany Johnson (Val Caron), is the current OCAA scoring leader with 21 regular season goals. She is also holds the OCAA record for goals in a season (28) and career goals (62). Johnson scored 83 goals in her four-year career with the Golden Shield.
  • Cambrian’s roster showcases Northern Ontario talent, with a few players coming from southern Ontario. The team’s success demonstrates that athletes benefit from high-calibre coaching and long-term player development in Greater Sudbury.
