The versatility of Isabella Mastroianni is already well established.

A very competitive swimmer and runner on the local scene, the Grade 10 student at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School has parlayed her multi-sport approach with much success in recent years on the provincial triathlon circuit.

These days, however, the individual sports appear to be feeding off one another, providing even more notable results, even as Mastroianni returns to compete against athletes who are more or less specializing in a single domain.

One of eight swimmers who represented the Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre last week, Mastroianni garnered gold in both the 200m and 400m individual medley events, serving notice that her versatility extends even within the selection of different strokes at her disposal in the pool.

She would also final in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke races, finishing fourth in the latter in a time of 2:46.00. Joining Mastroianni on the podium, from a local perspective, were teammates Thomas Boyd and Everett Smith.

Boyd would walk away from the meet with four medals in hand, placing first in both the 100m and 200m backstroke, slipping back just one spot in the 200m freestyle, and closing things off with a bronze medal performance in the 100m freestyle.

Smith earned gold in the 50m freestyle, blazing through in 24.54 seconds, and adding a silver in the 50m race in a time of 53.55. He would also reach finals in the 200m freestyle, as well as both the 100m and 200m backstroke.

After registering the fastest time in preliminaries in the 100m butterfly (1:07.64), Ali Bertrim settled for fifth place in the event final, in spite of improving her time by just a notch (1:07.50).

Natalie Lefebvre would take part in both the 200m individual medley, as well as the 400m freestyle, placing 12th in the latter in a time of 4:37.06, while Tom Ryan (200m butterfly, 100m breaststroke) and Joseph Deni (50m freestyle, 100m/200m breaststroke) rounded out the male complement for the SLSC.

Jeremi Aubin swam in the in the 100m fly and finished ninth, but he earned fifth spot in the 200m fly. He also grabbed eighth place in the 200m back.

The local swim club will close off the 2016-2017 season, sending a couple of kids to the Québec Cup (July 13-16), and wrapping things up with a small group heading to Junior Nationals in Toronto at the end of the month.
