Sudbury drops Windsor 103-91 on home court to claim its first Basketball Super League title

The Windsor Express and the Sudbury Five took to the court in Sudbury on Tuesday night for the fifth and deciding game of the Basketball Super League finals. 

The Sudbury Five came out flying from start to finish and claimed their first championship with a 103-91 victory. 

“Thank you for your support, Sudbury, this one's for you!” said head coach and general manager Logan Stutz after the final. The first quarter was all Sudbury, with the Five scoring 32 points in the quarter while holding the Express to just 13, with JD Miller leading Sudbury with nine points in the quarter.

Windsor outscored Sudbury in the second quarter by a 24-20 margin, but still had a long hill to climb, trailing Sudbury 52-37 at the halftime break.

The third quarter was the closest quarter of the game, with Sudbury edging out a 27-26 margin in the quarter, with Miller once again leading Sudbury with 10 points in the quarter, giving the Five a 79-63 lead with one quarter remaining in the championship game. 

The Express outscored the Five in the fourth quarter 28-24, but it wasn’t enough for Windsor. 

The Sudbury Five came away with a 103-91 victory over the Windsor Express, claiming the 2025 Basketball Super League championship, the first championship victory in Sudbury Five history and the city of Greater Sudbury’s first professional sports championship in the city’s history.

Sudbury Five power forward JD Miller was named Basketball Super League Finals Most Outstanding Performace.

“We've been working hard for it all year, we did the work and these are the results,” said Miller after he was handed the trophy.  

During the post-game celebrations when the team was handed the championship trophy, named The Super Lillie, Stutz told the crowd that it was the first championship but “it won’t be the last.”

David Magley, Super League president, asked the crowd for a round of applause for the team : “For the first champions in the history of Sudbury and for the fans, the consistent best crowd in all of North America.”  

The Sudbury Five look towards the off season and coming back to defend their title for the 2025-2026 Basketball Super League season.
