The Sudbury U11 Jam Girls fell just short of claiming a Division 2 gold medal, this in a year which would see the team leap one full bracket higher in the provincial rankings.

Participating at the Basketball Ontario Provincial Championships in London earlier this month, the Jam posted a game one 32-20 victory over the London Ramblers, as a well-balanced attack featured contributions from Syla Swords, Savvy Swords, Mathilde Fleury, Madina Jebreen, Isabel McKague, Bree Bourget and Mahtressa Paris.

Success on Saturday for the Sudbury crew continued, as the team upended both the Barrie Royals (24-13) and Nepean Blue Devils (19-16), earning a berth in the finals opposite the Mississauga Monarchs.

With the likes of Sophie Alexander, Olivia Tissot and Chloe Morin-Gagnon demonstrating hustle at both ends of the court, and Ella Bourget providing the squad with constant support and encouragement, the northern girls managed to keep things close for much of the game.

The Monarchs, however, would pull away in the end, outscoring the Jam 34-25. Fleury, Jebreen, Paris, Fleury and the Swords' sisters were joined on the score sheet by Emilie Miller, Kami Dreger and Mia Yurich, accounting for the Sudbury offense in this encounter.

While the silver medal might have left the team just one spot short of their end goal, the fact remained that the team which finished the 2015-2016 season by capturing bronze in the Division 3 bracket climbed up to second in Division 2, or #10 overall in the province, under the guidance of coaches Shelley Swords and Jen Bourget this year.
