Cross-country skier Devon Kershaw, a two-time Olympian and three-time World Cup medallist has set his sights on the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and will tell residents of his plans Aug. 8 at Science North.

A Sudbury native, Kershaw began his skiing career when he was a child with a local cross-country ski club. He enjoyed participating in a variety of sports growing up, but found his passion in Nordic racing. When he was younger, he participated in three World Junior Championships and won 18 National Junior medals on his way to becoming one of Canada’s best male cross-country skiers, according to a news release.

In 2006, Kershaw became the first Canadian male to achieve a podium result in a sprint event in Sweden. He won bronze and simultaneously also became the second Canadian male ever to achieve a podium result in the World Cup. This past March, Kershaw set a new record, becoming the first Canadian male ever to finish second overall when he took home the silver medal, also in Sweden, and topping off one of his best seasons ever.

In addition to World Cup races, Kershaw also participated in the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy before taking to the Olympic stage in his home country during Vancouver 2010, setting a record and placing fifth. With such a close finish on home soil, Kershaw has not given up on the gold, and will strive for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Science North staff encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to meet a local Olympian and World Cup Nordic champion from 7-9 p.m. Visitors can meet Kershaw free of charge.
