Knights finally in the win column

A pair of late tallies made the difference as the Lo-Ellen Park Knights registered their first win in four games, quieting the Bishop Carter Gators 2-0 in SDSSAA boys soccer action Tuesday in Hanmer.

"It stayed close, but in the end, we finally started finishing," said Knights midfielder Julian Scodnick, who opened the scoring with roughly 10 minutes to play. "We have to work on our finishing, we had a lot of chances."

Jay Lemon added an insurance marker a short while later as the Knights improved to 1-2-1 in preparation of a big game today vs. the St. Charles College Cardinals.

"We're starting to improve as a team, building a little more chemistry," said Scodnick, an 18-year-old Grade 12 student, now in his third year with the team. "Towards the end of the season, we're usually better."

In the girls game that opened the festivities in Hanmer, Lo-Ellen and Bishop Carter played to a 1-1 draw, with Chelsea Noble-Poland (Knights) and Amanda O'Gorman (Gators) handling the scoring.

The defending boys champions from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School made it five for five this year, posting a 3-0 whitewash of the Confederation Chargers.
Shawn Wilcox scored twice for the winners, with Brandon Moxam rounding out the attack. The Confederation girls manage to earn the school a split, of sorts, defeating the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères 3-1.

Emily Villenueve paced the offence with a two-goal effort, with Shayna Graham netting a single, while Stéphanie Legault countered for ESMC.

The Lively Hawks picked up a sweep over the Sudbury Secondary North Stars, winning the girls game 3-0 and then doubling the visitors 4-2 in the boys encounter.

Colleen Bocy, Jamie Duncanson and Tara St. Jean found the back of the net for the ladies, while Jon Barrett, with a pair, Brandon Sasseville and Brad Pankow drilled home goals for the Lively guys.

The Lasalle Lancers are looking like Division I might have been a better option, dominating for a second straight game in beating the Espanola Spartans 4-0. Karly Hellstrom recorded the hat trick, with Jillian Vallier chipping in with a solo tally.

On the turf at James Jerome, the Marymount Regals blanked the Horizon Aigles 4-0, raising their record to 2-0-1 as Chantae Robinson scored twice. Courtney Smith and Hannah Thompson added on goal apiece, while Megan Smith picked up her second shutout of the year.

A second game pitting the Sacré-Coeur Griffons and Champlain Requins was forfeited as the Rayside-Balfour ladies did not show for the matchup, a rescheduled contest from Week 1.
