With only one returning player to the Sudbury Midget "AA" Lady Wolves roster this year, a large group of newcomers to this level were given an early season eye-opener this past weekend.

Competing at the 12th Annual Stoney Creek Sabres Midget Showcase, the Lady Wolves failed to hit the win column in round robin play, but closed things off on a winning note against a very familiar foe.

The locals were swamped out of the gate, dropping a 6-0 decision to the Pittsburgh Elites on Friday afternoon, and suffering a 7-1 setback to the silver medal winning Chicago Mission in their evening encounter.

A tight matchup Saturday afternoon would see OHA (Ontario Hockey Academy) White edge the Lady Wolves 2-1, with the team closing out pool play with a 3-0 loss to the London Devilettes.

Based on their seeding within their division, the Lady Wolves would draw the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats for their "friendship game", slipping past the Lock City crew 3-2.

While there is obviously plenty of time for coaches Daran Moxam and Brent Battistelli to work on helping the team start to climb the ranks, the scope of the challenge facing the team in Northern Ontario was evident by the end of the weekend.

The North Bay Ice Boltz went on to capture gold at the event, trimming the Chicago Mission 3-2 in overtime in the championship final. The Boltz registered seven straight victories en route to the title, with Sudbury and North Bay set to compete for the regional berth in provincials come March of 2017.

In exhibition play closer to home, the Sudbury Bantam "AA" Lady Wolves showcased a balanced attack earlier this week in Val Caron, blanking the Sudbury Midget "A" Lady Wolves 6-0.

Danielle Pitre, Taylor Scott, Kelsey Dunn, Deseray Zazulak, Hanna Smith and Chloe Leduc scored one goal apiece for the Bantams, while Mireille Kingsley recorded the shutout with an 18-save performance.

Both teams will kick off tournament play in the coming weeks. The Midget "A" squad will join the Atom "AA", Peewee "AA" and Peewee "BB" Lady Wolves' teams at the Oakville Hornets 2016 Harvest Classic Tournament from Sept. 16 - 18, while the Bantam "AA" girls travel to Stoney Creek the very next weekend.
