Laurentian University hosted the Canadian Junior Men’s National Team (JMNT) tryout camp recently, which is the first step in determining the final roster that will represent the nation at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men in Latvia.

Shawn Swords, a former senior men’s national team member and current head coach of the Laurentian Voyageurs men’s basketball program, said he was pleased with how the camp went for the 16 athletes and is hopeful that the roots have been planted for an ongoing relationship between Basketball Canada and Laurentian University.

“Everything went smoothly and the athletes were able to focus on performing on the court,” Sword said. “The team was treated to some first class northern hospitality.”

Swords is an assistant coach with the JMNT, who also represented Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

By partnering with Canada Basketball, Laurentian University has taken a lead role in continuing to solidify the relationship between Canada Basketball and Canadian Interuniversity Sport. This is another step in creating a unified alliance between all basketball organizations across Canada to further develop the game, a press release stated.

The FIBA U19 World Championship for Men will be held from June 30-July 10 in Liepaja and Riga, Latvia.
