In a season of firsts, it turns out the Laurentian Voyageurs women's curling team weren't quite done yet.

After bringing home the OUA banner to the northern Ontario campus a few weeks back, the first provincial crown for the school, the team of Krysta Burns, Megan Smith, Sara Guy and Laura Masters captured the first ever national U Sports title in program history Wednesday afternoon in Thunder Bay.

The local rink downed the Lakehead Thunderwolves team skipped by Hailey Beaudry 7-4 in the final, breaking open a 2-2 affair with three in the sixth, adding two more in the ninth and eventually running the hometown favourite out of stones.

The victory capped the perfect final day for a team which needed a 5-2 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women (Emma Logan) in the seventh and final draw, just to clinch a spot in the semi-finals.

A 13-2 loss at the hands of the Alberta Pandas (Kristen Streifel) Tuesday afternoon would leave Burns and company sporting a record of 3-3, looking way up at the Alberta crew that reeled off seven consecutive preliminary round triumphs.

That streak came to a sudden halt earlier today, as Lakehead sent the Pandas reeling into the bronze medal encounter with a 7-5 win, while Laurentian booked their ticket to the gold medal game, downing the Dalhousie Tigers (Kristin Clarke) 8-3 in the remaining semi.

Under the guidance of coach Ryan Lafraniere while donning the colours of the Voyageurs, the L.U. foursome represents the exact same lineup that captured bronze medals at the Canadian U21 (Junior) Curling Championship in Victoria in late January.
