Laurentian Nordic Ski Team Coach Konrad Wiltmann believes this is potentially the start of a new era for Voyageur skiing.

"The team is huge this year,” said Wiltmann, a Laurentian alumni and former Voyageur skier. "We have a solid 20 skiers, and a few who can be really quick.”

The team has been gearing up for ski season since September, with four weekly group practices to supplement athletes' individual training.

Last year, the Lakehead Thunderwolves' decade-long reign as OUA women's team champions came to a resounding halt when they were defeated by the Carleton Ravens.

The Voyageurs are also hoping to shoulder their way into medal contention against a highly competitive OUA field.

"We want to go to Duntroon, Temiskaming (Ontario Cups), Ottawa (Canadian Eastern Championships) and Canmore (Cross-Country Ski Nationals), so we need a bit of help getting to these races," said Wiltman.

That help is coming in the form of the Varsity Vampire Run, a Halloween-themed run built off the success of Laurentian Nordic's Finlandia Trail Run Series.

The event, which is being held Oct. 30 at the Laurentian Community track, welcomes both competitive and non-competitive runners and walkers of all ages.

Participants can choose from a 3.3 km or 6.6 km course with a mix of wide and single-track sections. Kids are also invited to take part in a Kids Fun Run.

Registration is open from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on race day at the track. Kids under 12 are $10 to register and adults are $15.

Kids and adult races begin at 5:15 p.m. Participants are also welcome to wear their Halloween costumes.
