The Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club recently kicked off the 2012-2013 competitive season, hosting some 15 northern clubs and roughly 400 swimmers for the NEOR (Northeastern Ontario Region) Developmental Meet.

The highlight, from a local perspective, came courtesy of 14-year-old Erik Wainman, who broke a regional record dating back to 1984, setting a new standard in the Male 13-14 100-metre breaststroke. Wainman covered the distance in a time of 1:07.93, bettering his own personal best by 1.16 seconds while establishing a new benchmark for the north.

Other SLSC swimmers hitting the podium with top three finishes included Nina Kucheran, Philippe de la Riva, Sam Reich, Hannah Nordquist, Kelly Thompson, Scott Baxter-Derro, Dawson O’Hara, Emmy-Lou Kucheran, Alison Cudmore, Chris Eastick, Justin Burton-McCarthy, Emily Jones, Alex Langlois, Alex Sarvas, Julie Langlois, Kasey Thompson, Kelly Hotta and Emilie Whipple.

Registering four first-place finishes, de la Riva topped the local contingent. Jones nabbed three gold medals while Nordquist, Hotta, Eastick, Wainman and Cudmore all touched first in two different events apiece.

The older component of the SLSC is next in action at the Harvest Invitational Swim Meet in Etobicoke, a competition being hosted by the Mississauga Aquatic Club.
