Cambrian College announced this week the return of badminton as a varsity sport for the 2019-2020 season.

It’s been three years since the Golden Shield last fielded a badminton team.

“As a former badminton athlete and coach, it means a lot to see this sport return to Cambrian,” says Tim Yu, Cambrian’s Athletics Manager, who won two gold medals and one silver in men’s doubles badminton during his playing days at Cambrian. “It is a unique sport that offers a lot of opportunity for our players to get into the action. We were a powerhouse in this sport, and we look forward to building a successful team again.”

From 1969 to 2016, the school’s badminton team was a powerhouse on the courts, winning 10 provincial overall team titles, including seven in a row between 1999 and 2006. The Golden Shield badminton team also captured provincial titles in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, and national titles in men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles, making it Cambrian’s most successful varsity sport.

“We know that varsity athletics is an important factor that many students consider before choosing a college, so we’re very happy to be expanding our roster of teams to make Cambrian that much more attractive to potential students,” said college president Bill Best.

The new Golden Shield badminton team will be led by Jim Duff, a coach with the Sudbury Junior Badminton Club and two high school teams in Greater Sudbury. He also coached Team Northern Ontario at the Ontario Winter Games.

Cambrian College also announced the signings of new athletes and coaches to its existing soccer, volleyball, and cross-country running teams this week. The new athletes joining the Golden Shield this September come from across Ontario.
