On Nov. 3, the Marymount Regals set a new milestone in the annals of local flag football history: the team won its 7th consecutive city championship.

Head coach Dan Bartolucci called it an unprecedented feat.

That Friday, the Regals rolled over the Confederation Chargers 7-1 to win the title.

“The Marymount and Confederation flag football rivalry is arguably the best rivalry in high school sports,” Bartolucci told Sudbury.com. “There us a huge level of mutual respect on both teams.”

After three scoreless quarters, Confederation kicked a one-point rouge to begin the fourth. Undaunted, the Regals offence took charge and held the ball for the next 11 minutes, completing an impressive drive with an Allie Weiler handoff to full back Carlie Parker from the three-yard line and straight into the end zone.

Allie Weiler kicked a successful PAT and left only 54 seconds on the clock for the Chargers to try to make up the difference. After a couple of threatening plays, the Regals’ tough defence, coached by Jason Weiler, shut the door and secured the incredible win. Marymount’s defence boasts an impressive five shutouts in eight games.

The win over Confed was likely all the more sweeter for Marymount as, two weeks earlier, the Chargers broke the Regals’ 27-game win streak (dating all the way back to 2014) with a 1-0 win in their regular season matchup.

“We were disappointed after the loss to Confed. a couple of weeks ago, but we weren’t crushed,” Bartolucci said. “Confed is a fantastic team, a team that forces us to be better.  We learned a lot from that game, made some adjustments, and really worked hard in practice this past week.

“I could not be happier for each of our coaches, players, parents, staff and alumni that have been supporting us with great numbers at each of the games this season. The crowd noise and energy at James Jerome on Friday night will be remembered by many for a long time.”
