The Gymnastics Ontario Provincial Championships have been kind to the Sudbury Laurels GymZone contingent once again. Local gymnasts collected no less than five medals, with a number of other strong performances as both the women’s and men’s artistic teams travelled to Ottawa late last month.

In her first year in the Level 6 grouping, Andree-Anne Bechard-Cote garnered an all-around silver medal in a field of more than 30 competitors, also capturing bronze on the beam.

The Macdonald-Cartier senior added a sixth and seventh place finish, in the vault and bars, respectively, earning an aggregate score of 46.70 and finishing second only to Rebecca Richardson of Ottawa.

Grade 7 student Kayla Folz (Level 8 - age 12/13) nabbed silver on both her vault and floor routines, while James Tremblay matched the second-place finish on the Pommel Horse.

Tremblay and Kari Sakki represented the Laurels in the men's artistic competition. The 2012 championships marked the first time in a number of years that both the women’s and men’s artistic competitions had been staged at the same time, at the same venue .The Nepean Corona School of Gymnastics served as host to the event that gathered hundreds of young gymnasts from across the province.

In other noteworthy results from a local perspective, Adria Lumley (Level 5 – age 14+) finished sixth on the bars and ninth overall while competing at the provincial level for the first time.

Recently crowned NOSSA champion Jennifer Drane (Level 7 – age 14+) qualified for the event final of the vault, and placed fifth in an exciting showdown in which the entire field of eight vaulters were separated by only 0.325 in their scores.

While the artistic teams will enjoy a short break from competition, the tumbling and trampoline crew will spring to action throughout much of the month of May.

A total of nine gymnasts, both male and female, represented the Sudbury Laurels in the nation’s capital.
