Here's a weekly update on action involving local teams in the Great North Midget League (GNML).

Sudbury Nickel Capitals

The Capitals have taken the league by storm in its first two games. The Capitals bounced the Kapuskasing Flyers in the first game 10-1 at Countryside Arena last Saturday. The Capitals were paced by Kyle Tarini, who ripped three goals. Goalie Joey Delwo stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced for the win.

The Capitals followed up the commanding performance with a 6-3 blasting of the New Liskeard Cubs at Countryside Arena last Sunday. The Capitals were lead by Dale A. Pidutti, who scored three goals. Goalie Andre Frappier thwarted 28 shots for the victory.

The Capitals are currently led in scoring by Vern Cooper, who has recorded two goals and five points in the first two games.

The Capitals currently hold down first place in the GNML with a record of 2-0-0-0.

The Capitals' next games are this weekend, when they face Kirkland Lake on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Countryside Arena. Game time is 2:30 pm. The Capitals are right back in action on Sunday, Sept. 18, when they travel to North Bay to take on the Trappers. Game time in Gateway City is 1:20 pm.

Valley East Cobras

The Cobras had the tough test of playing last year's GNML champion Sault Ste. Marie North Stars in its first two games, and both were in the Sault.

The Cobras lost 4-2 on Sept 10 and lost 5-0 on Sept 11.

Scott Faulkner and Alex Fiset each scored for the Cobras, and currently led the team in scoring with one goal and one point apiece. Goalie Shawn Sirwan allowed the four goals in the first game, and goalie Tyler Beskowany allowed five goals in the second game.

The Cobras currently hold down sixth place in the GNML with a record of 0-2-0-0.

The Cobras next game is Friday, Sept. 23 when they host the North Stars. Game time at the Ray Plourde Arena is 8:20 pm.

The Sabrecats have yet to sink their teeth into the competition. The Sabrecats play their first game today, Friday, Sept. 16 against New Liskeard in New Liskeard. Game time is 8 pm.
