Sudbury Wolves forward Nick Baptiste had a breakout season in 2013-14, and it certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
Baptiste signed an entry-level contract with the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres on May 31.
The 18-year-old was Buffalo’s third-round selection, 69th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Reached at his Ottawa home this week, Baptiste said signing his first NHL contract was a dream come true.
“It’s been unbelievable the last few days for me and my family, I’m lucky to be with a great organization, but the work is just beginning” said Baptiste.
Baptiste had career highs in goals (45), assists (44) and points (89) last season as he led the Wolves in scoring.
“It was a good year for me as I think I produced well. Obviously we didn’t get the results we wanted as a team. I’d give away all my personal accolades for team success, but at the end of the day it’s good to be recognized for having a good season.”
Sudbury Wolves management was also happy to hear Baptiste had signed with the Sabres.
“The Sudbury Wolves are extremely proud of Nick’s achievement and wish him well in his pursuit of a roster spot with the Buffalo Sabres in September,” said Wolves’ President Blaine Smith.
“Nick has been an outstanding player for us. Nick gained a lot of confidence over the past season and he has been rewarded for his efforts. Nick has been a leader for us on and off the ice, and we know he will do the same for Buffalo.”
Baptiste will head down to the Sabres Prospects Camp on July 12 and then back to Buffalo for the main training camp at the end of August.
