The Sudbury Minor Hockey Association Royal Bank Fun Day Tournament came to a close Jan. 13 at the Carmichael Arena, extending a local hockey tradition that has now thrived for 29 years.

A total of 20 teams were in town for the three-day competition, including entries from Gore Bay, North Bay, Sault Ste Marie and Espanola.

The Novice A encounter turned out to be the closest of the four as Liam Love snapped a 3-3 tie with 6:18 to play, lifting the SMHA Polar Barons past the Valley East Jenmar Jets 4-3.

Seth Marlok accounted for all three remaining goals for the winners, with Caleb Dakin (2) and Caleb Daigle replying for the Jets in the opening period.

The Novice B final produced a surprisingly tight-checking affair as Valley East Urban Windows & Doors blanked the Espanola Eagles 2-0.

Landon Doyle and Mark Brosseau found the back of the net for the Valley boys, with Andrew Hughson standing tall between the pipes, recording the shutout.

The Soo IDA scored twice in every period, cruising to a 6-0 win over the SMHA Penguins in the gold-medal encounter of the Tyke A Division.

Nicholas Michaud-Couture and Kaylob Thibodeau paced to Sault Ste Marie attack with two goals apiece, with singles courtesy of Andrew Vair and Brett Wilson.

Finally, the goals were coming fast and furious with Tyke B bragging rights on the line as Valley East Neil's Independent Cobras stopped the Rayside-Balfour Wildcats 10-3.

The Cobras were powered by hat tricks from both Mathieu Brassard and Ethan Morris, while Boston Renaud, Nolan Lafrance, Dylan Dodge and Meghan Paquette joined in with one goal each.

Benoit Hogue, with a pair, and Kelly Clark answered in a losing cause for the Wildcats. The next houseleague tournament on the agenda for the Sudbury Minor Hockey Association will come near the end of February.

The Wayne and Lucie Eadie Spirit of Hockey Houseleague Tournament runs from Feb. 22-24, with registration information available on the SMHA website at www.smha.net.
