The Ontario Hockey League announced late Friday afternoon it has punished the Niagara IceDogs for unspecified recruitment violations.

As a result, the team will have to pay fines totalling $250,000  and will lose its 1st round picks in the 2019 and 2021 OHL draft.

“These fines follow a league-requested third-party investigation by the law firm of Lax O’Sullivan Lisus Gottlieb LLP,” the release said. “This investigation found that the club violated certain League player recruitment policies.”

OHL commissioner David Branch is quoted as saying in the release the league is committed to “ensuring a fair and competitive on-ice experience among all teams.

“In order to maintain the integrity of this player experience and competitiveness within the league, it is critical that all clubs operate within the league recruitment guidelines,” Branch said. “When a club ignores these guidelines, significant sanctions are required.”
