One up! Canadians go super with Mario jerseys

Rayside Balfour Canadians face-off against the Blind River Beavers in NOJHL's first Super Mario-themed jersey night on Feb. 27

The Rayside Balfour Canadians Jr. A Hockey Club is looking to one-up the competition during the first ever Super Mario-themed jersey night in the NOJHL.

The Canadians will battle the Blind River Beavers on Feb. 27, a game which could very well determine which team wins the first place title in the Western Division.

Fans will be able to place bids on each of the players' jerseys during the game. All proceeds from the jersey auction will be donated to the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC).

"We are so incredibly proud to have been selected by the Rayside-Balfour Canadians for their first ever themed game night," NOFCC director Dayna Caruso said in a press release.

"Being involved with such a well-known community hockey organization provides a huge opportunity to raise awareness for our charity and childhood cancer; we are so thankful to the organizers for all their hard work and dedication to families in our community and around the north."

The "Super Hero" themed jersey hockey promotion was first introduced to Greater Sudbury four years ago by Brittany Zacerkowny and former Sudbury Wolves owner Mark Burgess. Brittany was instrumental in the design of the first-ever super hero themed jersey in 2016. The Superman-themed jersey was a big hit with young fans and the inaugural event raised a whopping $10,000 for the NOFCC. This donation represents the highest-amount raised to date.

The Super Mario-themed jersey night game is sponsored by William Day Construction, who made a $1,000 donation to the NOFCC to jumpstart the fundraiser.

The NOFCC will be hosting a 50/50 draw at the game and proceeds from the sale of beer and wine at the game will also be donated to the NOFCC, courtesy of Lou Laberge of the Horse Tavern.

Tickets are available at the door and silent action will be held in the front lobby of the Chelmsford Arena.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.
