The Ontario University Athletics (OUA)
announced their all-star teams for women's soccer recently, and
surprise, surprise, the Laurentian University women's goalies
were snubbed from the first and second all-star teams. This is
a true injustice.
Let's start by looking at the winners.
On the North/South Division, which Laurentian
competes in, the First All-Star team goalie is University of
Toronto goalkeeper Andrea Tristo. She played nine of her team's
10 games and allowed three goals, while compiling a 4-3-1
record to help her team to the playoffs.
The team in front of her scored a total of 16
goals in the 10 games.
On the second team, there was a tie between
Brock University goalie Tiffany Scriver and Nipissing
University goalie Anna Violo.
Scriver played in seven games and allowed
five goals, putting together a 3-2-1 record to help her team
make the playoffs.
The team in front of her scored a total of 10
goals in 10 games.
Violo played in eight games and allowed a
whopping 20 goals. She posted a record of 2-5, and her team
didn't make the playoffs. Overall, Nipissing scored 12 goals in
10 games.
Then there's Katie McNamara and Julia
Boschetto, the Laurentian goalies, whose combined efforts
produced seven straight shutouts to start the season.
In five games, McNamara only allowed two
goals, while obtaining a record of 2-1-2. Boschetto played five
games and allowed three goals. Laurentian made the playoffs,
and the team in front of McNamara and Boschetto only scored
eight goals in 10 games, making their performances that much
more important.
That's the stuff of legends and worthy of an
all-star spot.
They held the competition off the board, with
the help of a stingy defence, which allowed Laurentian to win
or tie their games and collect points to make the playoffs.
Many times, McNamara and Boschetto had to keep every ball out
of their net in order for the Lady Vees to succeed.
The bottom line is that McNamara and
Boschetto were more important and vital to their team than the
other three goalies who were named to all-star teams.
What's that all about?
The coaches of the OUA do voting. They must
be insane.
What do the Laurentian goalies have to do to
be recognized by the rest of the OUA?
My hat goes off to them. They may not be OUA
all-stars, but they're Sudbury all-stars and they have made all
us very proud.
Congratulations Katie and Julia, it was a
magical season!
