Photos: Idylwylde celebrates 100 years

The Idylwylde Golf & Country Club was established in 1922

Established in 1922, the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club celebrated its 100th anniversary last Friday.

You can read a comprehensive history of the golf club in this Sudbury.com article by freelancer Vicki Gilhula, published earlier this month.

The 100th anniversary celebration began with kids’ activities, followed by a ceremony, in which members of the club’s centennial committee unveiled a new commemorative clock, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Special guests Mayor Brian Bigger and Golf Canada representative Owen Rigg honoured the club with congratulatory plaques recognizing its historic milestone.

The event continued into the evening with fireworks and live music following the gala dinner.

The new commemorative clock is a Verdin golf clock. “The eye-catching timepiece was erected adjacent to the starter shack and will serve as a gathering and focal point for the golf course for years to come,” said an email from Idylwylde.

“The club's Centennial Committee decided on the signature Idylwylde branded clock to commemorate the 100th anniversary.

“The club also plans on adding the names of honorary Idylwylde life members (the founders, etc.) to the base or the surrounding area.”

Idylwylde said it would “like to thank the Greater Sudbury community, as well as the directors, committees, the members, volunteers, and the staff from over the years who have helped make the Idylwylde Sudbury's premiere private golf and country club.

“Here's to the next 100 years!”
