Ron Duguay's 'World Vision' a reality through Battle of the Blades

Ron Duguay's number hangs from the rafters at the Sudbury Arena, as a remembrance of the time he spent playing with the Wolves.

In 1977, the Hanmer native traded in his Wolves jersey for one bearing the New York Rangers' logo.

His 12-season long professional hockey career ended in 1989.

He didn't quit skating though.

In 2009, he laced up again to try his luck at figure skating. Duguay was paired with professional figure skater Barbara Underhill on CBC's reality show Battle of the Blades.

After being eliminated part way through the season, Duguay was still left with $12,500 to donate to the charity of his choice. He selected World Vision.

Duguay said his wife has sponsored a child in Haiti through World Vision for about nine years. He said the money goes toward supporting children's educations.

“Without education, they don't have a chance,” he said.

This past September, Duguay had the opportunity to spend five days in Haiti with his family, acting as “a witness for Canadians.” He was pleased to see his donation had been put to good use.

“The people there were so appreciative of what World Vision does,” Duguay said.

The money he gave to World Vision through Battle of the Blades was used to put roofs on two small schools.

He said he felt good knowing he could make a difference where it's needed.

With the Christmas season approaching, Duguay said local families interested in supporting World Vision can purchase goods to make their lives more comfortable or sponsor a child.
