Community partners have announced the construction of a 2.5 kilometre cross-country ski trail at Laurentian University in memory of Sofie Manarin, the 17-year-old elite athlete who died last year after a cycling accident.

Community sponsors are Lockerby Composite School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, the Laurentian Nordic Ski Club and Laurentian University.

Lo-Ellen Park and Lockerby each raised $5,000 to construct the trail. The City of Greater Sudbury has matched these funds with a $10,000 capital investment through Neighbourhood Participation Projects, a municipal program which supplements fund-raising and in-kind services initiated by non-profit community groups.

Members of the Laurentian Nordic Ski Club worked through the summer to clear the trail in preparation for heavy equipment that is now on site. The trail will be ready this winter for cross-country skiers.

The new trail complements the Sofie Manarin Memorial Bursary Fund which was created by friends to support the development of juvenile and junior cross-country skiers.

Last March, a 24-hour Â?ski-a-thonÂ? at the Laurentian Nordic Ski Club raised $4,000 to help young skiers with racing and training expenses.
