Soccer, baseball 'harmonized'

Sports teams and athletes across the City of Greater Sudbury will soon pay the same fee to use soccer and baseball fields.

Sports teams and athletes across the City of Greater Sudbury will soon pay the same fee to use soccer and baseball fields.

Council approved a sports user fee harmonization bylaw Thursday evening, meaning sports teams in Capreol and Dowling will pay the exact same fee as teams and users in the former City of Sudbury within three years time.

The current fee structure saw teams and users in the former city pay about $17 an hour to rent soccer and ball fields, while the fee was about $12 per
hour in the outlying regions.

The new fee will be harmonized over the next three years. At the end of the process, all teams and users will pay about $15 an hour to use soccer and
ball fields.

Councillor Andre Rivest worked on the user fee harmonization committee. The group "didn't receive a single complaint" from any user group during several rounds of public consultations, he said.

The plan also calls to city staff to ensure ball and soccer fields are upgraded and improved over the course of the next three years throughout Greater Sudbury, said Rivest.
