The Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League celebrated its 100th anniversary this year and on Nov. 8, it brought the members of its three divisions together for an evening of celebration at the Caruso Club.
In its inaugural season, the Over 50 division saw four teams participating in league action: SC Italia, Sudbury Hawks, Nickel City Lasers and Sudbury Athletics. Italia won the regular season tittle and the playoff final with a tight 1-0 over the Sudbury Hawks.
Tony Nuziale of SC Italia was awarded top goal scorer for the division.
In the Over 40 Division, the regular season championship went to Afro-Heritage while the Sudbury Italia Flyers took home the playoff championship and SC Italia claimed the Milan Vrab Memorial Cup.
Top goalscorer for the Over 40 division was Bini Ozino from Afro-Heritage.
In the Premier Division, for the third straight year, the Sudbury Stallions swept all the division hardware.
“The centennial season of the Premier Division was a memorable one for the Sudbury Stallions who successfully defended its claim to the Anderson Cup (Regular Season Championship), the Bristol Machine Works Trophy, (Playoff Championship) as well as the Dagostino Memorial Trophy (Interleague Tournament Championship),” the league said in a news release.
The Anderson Cup was first donated in 1907 by Copper Cliff businessman John Anderson. It’s been the championship cup since 1911.
Born on the Isle of Wight, Anderson spent 33 years as a sailor before finding his way to Copper Cliff and a confectionary business.
“The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the championship trophy to the Sudbury Stallions by the great-grandchildren of John Anderson, Roy and Albert Anderson and Joan Dumontelle,” the league said.
In other award news, Adam Waram of the Sudbury Stallions was named coach of the year. Dominic Valentik of Sudbury Croatia Adria was awarded as the league’s top manager.
Joel Cropp of The Boys was picked as the league’s Most Gentlemanly Player, while Rookie of the Year honours went to Ceasar Delgado from Sudbury Latinos F.C.
Sudbury Afro-Heritage players took home the final two awards: Ayoub El Aasri was named SRCSL’s Most Valuable Player and Marcel Diro Top Goal Scorer.
