Based on voting by the league?s head coaches, running back DeVaughn Harper has been named the Sudbury and District Secondary School Athletic Association Most Valuable Player.

Harper was a key performer for the regular season and playoff champion Lo-Ellen Park Knights.

Harper collected three first-place votes, one second place vote and one third place vote, to become the first Knight to receive the Sid Forster Memorial Award since its inception in 1994.

Other top players considered for the award included Lasalle Lancer running back Byron Murray, Lo-Ellen Park running back Steven Gravel and Lockerby Composite quarterback and receiver Nick Shelswell.

The Sid Forster Memorial Award was established to honour the late Sudbury Spartans head coach and supporter of high school football.

Badminton tourney
The Northern Ontario Badminton Association Masters Badminton Tournament will be held at Cambrian College Sunday, Nov. 24.

The tournament is open to players in divisions, starting with the 35-40 division. Other divisions include ages 40 to 50 and a 50 and over division. Divisions include ladies doubles, men?s doubles and mixed doubles.

Play begins at 9 am. For more information, contact Dennis Dionne at 524-6106 or Clyde Sheppard at 693-1333. The entry deadline is Nov. 19.

Cambrian hockey opener
Only a few months ago, it appeared college hockey in Ontario might not be around for the 2002-03 season.

However, several schools made a commitment to continue offering college hockey. So, the Ontario College Athletic Association home schedule for the Cambrian College Golden Shield kicks off Saturday at 3:30 pm at Countryside Arena. Humber College will provide the opposition.

The Golden Shield are home for three straight games as they host Seneca Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3:30 pm and Seneca again Saturday, Nov. 30 at noon .All Cambrian home games this season will be played at Countryside Arena.

Doug Bonhomme returns as head coach with Peter Michelutti and Perry Smith returning as assistant coaches.
