Senior players in the Sudbury Canadians soccer club have the taken young soccer players under their wing by leading soccer training programs throughout the summer.

Trainers include players like Danielle Rancourt, captain of the Sudbury Canadians OWSL team, whose goal is to make the NCAA Division One Team in the Unites States, and Cloe Lacasse, who just returned from Quebec where she represented Ontario in the U16 National Championship.

Club head coach Frank Malvaso said the training model is a formula that has proven to be successful.

"It seems that younger girls respond much better to female trainers. The older girls do not only direct the skills training, but demonstrate them, and that seems to help many of the younger girls better identify, and motivates them to work harder."

Alongside Rancourt and Lacasse, many other senior Sudbury Canadian players can be found passing on their skills to the younger girls.

“We have been lucking (out) in that many of our older girls have played at a very high level, have the experience firsthand and know what it takes to play with the best in the province, Canada and the USA,” Malvaso said.

The Sudbury Canadians are currently in first place in the Ontario Women Soccer League and are headed to Michigan next week to play on the USA National Ranking Soccer Showcase tournament.

Players wishing to be trained by the Sudbury Canadians, starting the week of Aug. 10 should contact sudcan@isys.ca, phone Frank at 692-3261 or visit www.sudburycandians.com.
