Sudbury Curling Club celebrates 125 years

Marathon curling game highlights weekend of events

Nestled atop a hill off of Howey Drive sits the Sudbury Curling Club.

Inside of the club this weekend, members past and present, friends and Sudbury curling enthusiasts are taking part in the club's 125th anniversary celebration.

The weekend-long event kicked off on Friday afternoon as the first stones were thrown in a 125-end curling game.

The game went straight through the night on Friday and into Saturday, with the final end slated to be played at around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.

"It's not going to set and Guiness world records or anything, but we thought it was just a good way to kick off our 125th season," said Bill Sloan, Sudbury Curling Club President.

"We have people from other clubs coming in to play a few ends, members from our club, and people who are coming in from out of town. A lot of curlers in Sudbury curl at the different clubs so it's a nice way to bring everyone together."

The club is hosting a number of events over the course of the weekend including an anniversary dinner in the evening Saturday and a Hall of Fame ceremony.

"It's a way of recognizing the people who have helped grow this club over the years," said Sloan. "Whether it's people who have just given their time to the club, or curlers that have represented the club at the national level and beyond, it's our way to thank them and recognize what they've done for the Sudbury Curling Club."

The weekend wraps up with a closing celebration Saturday night with live music and fireworks at 10 p.m.
