The Sudbury Five have signed three players in advance of the 2023 season, which launches on Jan. 7 in a match against the Oakland County Pharoahs.

The Five announced this month that they’ve signed shooting guard Duane Notice, centre Jasonn Hannibal and guard (and former Laurentian Voyageur) Haroun Mohamed.

Notice suited up for the Hamilton Honey Badgers roster of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) during the 2022 season, having played for the team during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He played one season with the Raptors 905 of the NBA G League, and played internationally in 2017 for the Stal Ostrów Wielkopolski of the Polish Basketball League, including making an appearance in the 2017-2018 18 FIBA Europe Cup

“Standing 6-2, the Toronto native played at both youth and senior levels for the Canada Men’s National Basketball Team and won three bronze medals for Canada as a youth,” the team said in a news release. “Notice played college basketball for the University of South Carolina from 2013-2017, where he continues to remain the team’s all-time leader in games played (138), and second in three-point field goals made (219). Notice was also the 2015-16 SEC Sixth Man of the Year.”

Mississauga native Jasonn Hannibal, at 6-11, will bring a great deal of height to the Five.

He’s spen the past six season playing internationally, most recently with Pegasus Kin Lung in Hong Kong for the 2021-2022 season, where he averaged 26 points and 18 rebounds per game.

In early 2020, Hannibal played for the Macau Black Bears in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) and played with Hong Kong Eastern between 2017-2019 between the ABL and HKBA.

During  the 2015-16 season, Hannibal played for Correcaminos UAT in the Mexico professional league – Liga SISNova LNBP, and he also played one season for the Halifax Hurricanes of the NBLC in the 2014-2015  season. Prior to playing professionally, he played four seasons of NCAA basketball with the Portland Pilots.

"Jasonn is a player I think our fans will fall in love on and off the court with,” said Five Head Coach and GM Logan Stutz.

"Stay consistent, keep working and never give up no matter how bleak the situation looks,” Hannibal said in a news release. “That’s the  only way to ensure your dreams come true. See you soon Sudbury!"

Toronto native Haroun Mohamed spent the past four seasons playing for the Laurentian University Voyageurs. Holding a masters degree in human kinetics, during his final season with the Voyageurs, the 6-3 guard played 16 games, earning a 38.5-per-cent field goal average, a 24.7-per-cent three-point average and a 78.6-per-cent free throw average. He average 15.4 points per game.

"It's really cool to add a player from LU like Haroun,” said Stutz. “He's someone I know Sudbury is happy to keep in the  community and I am happy that he is now with the Five."

Mohamed said he’s excited to suit up for the National Basketball League of Canada squad this season.

“I’m excited to sign with the Five and can’t wait to get on the court in-front of all the fans,”  said Mohamed. “From Laurentian to the Five, it’s been a pleasure being a part of the community!”

The FIVE will return to action Jan. 7, 2023 against the Oakland Country Pharoahs. Season memberships are on-sale now at the Sudbury Arena box office or online at  greatersudbury.ca/tickets

Don’t forget the Five are taking on a team of average joes for a charity basketball game on Dec. 29. You can learn more about that here.
