It was quite the weekend for a bevy of Sudbury Girls Hockey houseleague teams last month at the 22nd Annual Brampton Cougars Friendship Festival, with SDGHA representatives returning north with both gold and silver medals.

The Sudbury Peewee Coyotes showed the way, from a local perspective, blanking Toronto-Leaside - Osborne in the championship affair. The Coyotes had looked impressive right from the get go, doubling the eventual silver medal winners 4-2 in their opening encounter.

Mackenzie Weber paced the locals with a two goal performance, with solo tallies courtesy of Zoe Bertrand and Morgan Sheppard. The northern crew improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 victory over Toronto-Leaside - Red, with Weber drilling the hat trick, joined on the scoresheet by both Sheppard and Mylie Landry.

No reason to slow down, as the Coyotes thumped a third consecutive Toronto-Leaside opponent, this time to the tune of a 7-1 triumph. Weber and Bertrand scored twice each for the winners, with Callie Prevost, Sheppard and Landry also finding the back of the net.

The Sudbury Peewee Panthers also travelled south for the event, squeezing in a 3-2 win against the Toronto-Leaside Blue Bombers between close losses at the hands of Toronto-Leaside Red (2-1) and Toronto-Leaside Osborne (3-1).

The second set of hardware came through the efforts of the Sudbury Atom Ice Breakers, who posted a 2-1 round robin record before stopping the Sudbury Atom White Wolves in semi-final action.

The Ice Breakers bounced back from a 7-1 loss to the West Nipissing Sting, getting the better of both Toronto-Leaside Annis (4-0) and the Aurora Purple Storm (2-0).

The White Wolves were even more impressive in preliminary round play, reeling off consecutive wins over the Whitby Wolves (3-0), Toronto-Leaside Orange (8-5) and Amherst Youth Hockey (3-0) from south of the border.

Finally, the Sudbury Midget Stellars found just the competition they were looking for at the same event, finishing with a round robin mark of 1-1-1. The Sudbury squad played to a 1-1 draw with the Windsor Wildcats in game one, registered a 2-0 whitewash of Toronto-Leaside Teal in game two, but closed out with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Kingston Ice Wolves in their tournament finale.
