Five different gymnasts representing the GymZone – Sudbury Laurels returned home with medals as the WAG (Women’s Artistic Gymnastics) crew travelled to their first qualifier of the 2019-20 season last month in Orangeville.

Among those reaching the higher end of the podium were first time provincial competitors Melina Doiron (Level 6 – Age 12 – silver on vault and beam) and Emma Hinschberger (Level 6 – Age 12 – silver on bars and all-around aggregate).

“Melina went in with very little nerves, hit all four of her events, and demonstrated a very powerful vault, taking home silver on the event,” said Laurels’ head coach Terra Davidson.

“Emma had a strong showing on bars, hitting her handstand on that event and putting up a great score of 9.20."

Also placing in the top three were Naomi Lake (Level 6 – Age 11 – bronze on bars and floor), Yasmine Larouche (Level 7 – Age 14 – bronze on vault) and Rachel Uguccioni (Level 9 – Age 16+ - silver on vault and floor).

Rounding out the list of local competitors were Abby Managhan (Level 7 – Age 14), Avery Roy (Level 6 – Age 10), Dylan Watts (Level 6 – Age 14), Chanelle Lazure (Level 7 – Age 16+), Abby Dupuis (Level 7 – Age 16+) and Isabella Sooley (Level 6 – Age 12).

The next qualifier for the WAG Laurels will come on the weekend of Jan. 30 to Feb. 2 at the Country Hoedown Qualifier in Alliston.
